Recovering after a hospital stay
Coming home from hospital is often harder than people expect.
You might have been managing reasonably well on the ward, but once you’re back in your own home things can feel very different. Walking feels harder, getting out of a chair takes more effort and everyday jobs can leave you more tired than they used to. It is also common to lose confidence, especially after a fall, surgery or a longer stay in hospital.
The good news is there is usually a lot we can do together to improve things. A home physiotherapy assessment often picks up small issues that are easy to miss day to day but can make a big difference to mobility, confidence and independence.
I regularly help people across West Suffolk who are recovering after a hospital stay, surgery or a period of illness. Treatment takes place in your own home, where the real challenges are happening, rather than in a clinic.
Why recovery can feel slow
Many people are surprised by how quickly strength and fitness can change during a hospital stay.
Even a short period of reduced activity can leave your legs feeling weaker and everyday tasks more tiring. Often it’s not just the physical side either. One wobble or near miss can knock confidence and make you think twice about doing things you previously managed without a second thought.
Families often tell me that their relative seemed fine in hospital but less steady once they got home. That’s not unusual. Hospital corridors are flat, bright and predictable. At home there are stairs, tighter spaces, different floor surfaces and all the normal day-to-day challenges that come with living independently.
How home physiotherapy can help
One of the biggest advantages of home physiotherapy is being able to assess how you move in your normal environment.
Rather than guessing what might be difficult, I can see exactly how you’re managing. That could be getting out of your favourite chair, walking to the kitchen, using the stairs or getting in and out of bed.
Treatment is tailored around the things that matter most to you. For some people that’s walking outdoors again. For others it’s feeling safer around the house or rebuilding enough strength to manage daily activities without needing help.
Because the assessment takes place at home, any exercises and advice can be fitted around your normal routine, making them more practical and easier to stick with.
Orthopaedic Rehabilitation at Home
I also provide home physiotherapy after surgery, including physiotherapy after knee replacement and physiotherapy after hip replacement.
Travelling to appointments isn’t always easy in the early stages of recovery. Home-based rehabilitation allows treatment to start where you are most comfortable and focuses on the activities you need to manage every day.
Recovery is never exactly the same for two people. Some need help improving walking distance and strength, while others need support with balance, confidence or returning to hobbies and activities they enjoy. The aim is always to help you recover safely and regain as much independence as possible.
Falls Prevention and Confidence
A lot of people assume falls prevention is only about balance exercises. In reality it’s usually much broader than that.
Strength, confidence, mobility, fatigue, pain and the home environment can all play a part. Sometimes a few simple changes combined with the right exercises can make a significant difference.
The most useful place to assess these things is often in the home itself. It allows me to see how you move day to day and identify any factors that may be increasing your risk of falls.
What Happens During the First Appointment?
The first appointment lasts around 60 minutes and gives us time to properly understand what is going on.
We’ll discuss your recent hospital stay, surgery or mobility concerns before looking at how you’re moving around your home. I will assess things such as walking, balance, strength and functional tasks, before putting together a clear plan to help you move forward.
Most people leave with practical advice, exercises and a better understanding of what is affecting their mobility and recovery.
